Some Background to Business Planning in Today's Competitive Environment

In today's increasingly competitive and rapidly changing market environment it is essential that a business seeks to continuously improve its competitive position:

  • in terms of the suitability and quality of its product and services;
  • its marketing, distribution and packaging/presentational concepts that effectively deliver the product or service to the client;
  • its sales and after-sales administrative arrangements that convert the demand generated by its marketing into specific sales orders; and
  • the production sytem that produces the product or service - on spec, on time, and on budget, so that the product/service is sold at a profitable price.

As every business knows, these desired concepts do not simply 'happen' - they require careful planning and concentrated management focus. It requires the integration of all of the above concepts into some form of 'plan' which can serve as the basis by which management can select appropriate business development strategies and then monitor their performance against the objectives which management has set.

The need to minimise management 'overheads' means, however, that few businesses can afford to have staff responsible on a full time basis for planning activities.

As businesses grow - and they really do not have to grow very much at all - the need for effective business planning increases and this will usually require external management support.

The engagement of an appropriately qualified consultant is therefore a most cost-effective approach - to assist the business in developing the management plan, in facilitating its subsequent application, and in providing on-the-job training to management by working co-operatively in the development of the business plan.

The Business Planning Group consists of senior experienced consultants with extensive backgrounds in both large and small business, and in Government, who can work with your management to develop practical business and marketing plans which can be promptly implemented so as to achieve rapid improvements in the management and operational functions of your business.
